“Sometimes the greatest gift we can give another human being is the opportunity to be heard without having to defend what they've experienced.”

- Action & Awareness for Suicide Prevention AASP THEY MATTER

The Human Connection Project

Have you ever looked at someone and thought to yourself, “There is nothing wrong with them” simply because they appeared healthy, happy, or capable of going about their everyday life? Here's the thing: Not every struggle is visible, and not every person who looks okay is actually okay. Many individuals are silently navigating chronic illnesses, invisible disabilities, mental health challenges, grief, trauma, or personal hardships that others may never fully see, know, or understand. But just because you cannot see someone's suffering does not make it any less real or deserving of compassion. Too often, we form opinions about people based on what we see on the outside, without ever considering what they may be experiencing internally. That is why we created The Human Connection Project, a community awareness initiative designed to challenge assumptions, reduce stigma, encourage empathy, and remind us of the importance of human connection. Through this project, we invite adults from all walks of life to anonymously share their experiences by answering one meaningful question: “What do you wish people understood about you?” Whether you live with an invisible illness, struggle with your mental health, feel misunderstood, or simply carry experiences you wish others recognized, your perspective has value. With your permission, selected anonymous reflections may be shared to help others better understand the realities people face behind closed doors. Our hope is that these personal insights will encourage people to listen more, judge less, and approach one another with greater compassion. You do not have to experience someone's struggles yourself to acknowledge that they exist, and you do not have to fully understand someone's journey to treat them with dignity and kindness. Before you assume you understand someone's life, remember that you may only be seeing the part they have learned to show the world. We invite you to participate below, share what you wish others understood about you, and help us build a community where fewer people feel invisible, misunderstood, or alone. Because #THEYMATTER
